As the sun continues to shine here in Sutton Veny, we have plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks and months as, with the turf season having got underway at the weekend, we are looking forward to making just as big an impact on the grass as we did on the all-weather during the winter months. We have a number of runners this week who look to hold strong chances. The first of our representatives will be Horseshoe Reef, who will line up in the 11f handicap at Southwell today (Tuesday). Only five runners have been declared and we feel this Australian import (pictured on the right of Findlay & Bloom's new 2yo Leroidesanimaux colt that arrived this week) will be well suited by the slower surface, as well as the application of first-time cheekpieces. All going well, he will belatedly build on the promise of his European debut when he finished a close second at Lingfield back in January.
Vamos was the first of our 'Try-Before-You-Buy' horses to run since the offer was announced (see marketplace) and he pleased us greatly with his run in the 5f maiden at Lingfield on Tuesday. Despite being considered in need of the run and us worrying that the sharp 5f trip may prove an inadequate test for him, he finished 5
Vamos will have his first start of the year in the 5f maiden at Lingfield today. He shaped very well on his racecourse debut over 5f at Great Leighs last September, showing his inexperience before staying on well in the closing stages. He has been gelded since that start and has begun to prosper physically in the last month or so. The horse (pictured) is sure to improve from this run, but it would be no surprise to us if he were to finish in the frame.
On Wednesday we will send Leonaldo to Kempton to run in the 7f handicap and we are more than hopeful that he can gain his first win for us since arriving from France in November in this contest. He has run with immense promise on both his starts for us, finishing third at Lingfield and being unlucky not to win at Wolverhampton on his latest outing. On that occasion, he travelled very strongly to lead 2f out and looked all over the winner, only to idle in front and lose the lead close home to Gallantry. We feel the drop back to this shorter trip will play to his strengths and, while we do have some slight reservations about going right-handed, we will be disappointed if he doesn
It has been a quiet week for us on the runners front, but a number of our horses acquitted themselves very well and it is unlikely to be long before they return to the winner
Street Power (pictured) has proved to be a tremendous servant to the yard this year and will have strong prospects of making it four wins from five starts in 2009 when he lines up in the 6f handicap at Wolverhampton on Wednesday evening. His progression has been remarkable since returning from a gelding operation and with him seeming to be even better suited by the drop to 6f when winning at Lingfield on his latest start (his previous two wins came over 7f), we would not be at all surprised if he was to win again. Tom Queally, who has ridden Nobelix and Doncosaque to victory for us in the past, will take the ride.
